It brings about a more equitable allocation of road space by encouraging greater use of public transport. It provides point to point connectivity.
Why do we need a metro in Nagpur City?
At present the population of Nagpur City is approximately 2.4 million and Nagpur metropolitan area is 13th largest conglomeration in India. Employment in Nagpur City is about 6 Lakhs having travel demand of total 2.2 million passenger trips every day. With growing population and mega development plans coming up, the travel demand is expected to grow steeply. With the growing economy and inadequate public transport services, the passengers will shift to private modes, which is already evident from the high vehicle ownership trend in the region which is around 12.37 Lakhs vehicles as per data of year 2012. This would not only aggravate the congestion on streets but also increase the pollution. Hence, it is essential to plan and provide a Metro Rail System in Nagpur.
Nagpur has several corridors whose peak hour peak direction traffic (PHPDT) volumes exceed 7000 and BRT alone cannot suffice. Hence, a high capacity public transport system is warranted as ridership levels increase. With the anticipated population of Nagpur Urban Agglomeration, 4.4 million in 2041, It is expected that the PHPDT in the transit network, along the corridors such as Automotive Square to MIHAN and Prajapati Nagar to Lokmanya Nagar Corridors would be around 15,000 and 12,000 PHPDT respectively. Bus augmentation will not be able to cater to the increased public transit load. Hence Metro Rail system project is proposed.
